The rods are inshore rods for smaller fish using small reels spooled with PE2 - . PE5. It is a challenger to catch 50 - 100 lb tuna with such a light rod. Diamond jigs works great for tuna.You are right, for popping you want the 18000 for the faster retrieve. I started out using a 20k as "double duty" and the extra line capacity. I was SHOCKED when I actually got an 18k. The difference was night and day. As for line capacity, the 18k spool holds 350yds of JB 100 hollowcore. This isn't needed for strength but is used to form a safety. Tie the Uni safety an inch beyond where the solid exits the splice. The breakdown didn't take that long, it's the washing, cleaning, brushing, re-lubing, photo capturing, and formatting that took forever.i have 2 mxj's. although you can put 300 yards of 65 lb. braid it only has 9-12 lbs of drag. and even with that little of drag the handle gets hard to crank at the upper range. should work for smaller fish. there are people catching larger fish with these reels but will take some finessing.But over here on 360tuna we fish for true big 'uns and those classics that can easily handle nearly any Striper that swims with 12lbs of drag simply cannot handle large tuna and jacks.
